Classic Air Force
St Mawgan
Note Classic Airforce Newquay has now closed and relocated to Coventry. The following is for the historical record only.
On 29 March 2013, The Classic Air Force (CAF) opened its hangar doors for the first time to the public. The CAF are located in the former Nimrod hangar (404) at St Mawgan, which with its 60,000 square feet of space, is big enough to house an extensive collection of aircraft. The aircraft have been arriving recently from their former home at Airbase Coventry. The museum has a very live feel to it, and many of the aircraft are airworthy. It intends to fly aircraft out of the CAF hangar to airshows around the country and offer pleasure flights over Cornwall.
It is early days for CAF, but there is huge potential to create a superb visitor attraction at this excellent location. More aircraft are due to arrive soon as and when crew availability and weather conditions at Coventry allow.
One aircraft which has recently made it to CAF is BAC 1-11 - ZH763, which flew out from Boscombe Down on 26 April 2013 to her new home at St Mawgan. I was lucky to be at Boscombe the morning the 1-11 flew out, which was the last flight of this aircraft type in the UK. Some shots of the 1-11 leaving Boscombe can be found here - BAC 1-11 ZH763
